Agnes L. Smith, 78, was born on Sept. 4, 1939, in Loreauville, La., to the late Moise Lewis and Lillian Broussard Lewis. She departed this life on Friday, July 6, 2018, at 5:16 p.m. at Memorial Hospital in Lake Charles, La. Agnes is at peace with her Lord rejoicing in her new heavenly home.
Agnes met Earnest Smith at Grambling College in 1959 and was married on Nov. 19, 1961. She moved to Lake Charles in Nov. 1961. On Aug. 22, 1967, their first and only son, Earnest Fitzgerald was born.
Agnes, a life long Catholic, was a member of St. Henry Catholic Church in Lake Charles, La. She was kind and friendly to all people, but had extra love for her husband, son, church and the children she taught in school.
Being such a warm, generous, caring human being, Agnes attracted many friends and admirers throughout the course of her life. She will be greatly and forever missed.
Agnes was an incredibly loving, warm, caring, and devoted mother to her son. They adored each other. Being a loving, devoted, loyal son, Ernie saw his mother as being a true angel here on earth, in every way possible. Along with providing the sunlight in his life, through the help of Almighty God, Agnes was the center of his universe here on Earth. Her absence will sadly forever leave that sunlight permanently dimmed. The passing of this beautiful angel has left his heart shattered in a million pieces, beyond repair.
With tremendous ease, our wife and mother made our house a wonderful, peaceful, loving home. Now, it has become merely a shelter with a roof and walls. The cherished happy memories of this extremely special human being will help sustain us during this time of great loss, sorrow and for the remainder of our lives. We find comfort in knowing that our dear Agnes has been welcomed into her heavenly home by the Almighty Father and is at peace, resting and happy in paradise.
Putting the well being of other ahead of herself was something that occurred quite frequently. Known for being an excellent cook, many delicious meals were enjoyed by family members and many friends.
She received her elementary and secondary education in the Iberia Parish School System and received a B.S. degree from Grambling College, Master's and plus 30 semester hours from McNeese State University.
Employed by the Calcasieu Parish School System, retiring with 32 years of service, Agnes taught school in the Westlake, Sulphur and Lake Charles areas during the course of her career. She retired from Oak Park Elementary School.
She was a member of many professional organizations but her favorite was Delta Sigma Theta Soroity, becoming initiated at Grambling College. Agnes possessed great pride in and strong dedication to her life long Catholic faith.
She was preceded in death by her father; mother; and five older siblings.
She leaves to cherish her joyous memories, her husband; son; and many friends.
