Obituary

Albertha "Miss Sugar" Brown passed away June 17, 2019 at DeQuincy Care Center at the age of 101. She was preceded in death by her husband Abner Brown in 1961. Sugar Brown was born in Gurley, Louisiana 1917 and at a young age she moved with her family to DeQuincy. She was a proud graduate of Rosenwald School. She was a member of Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church, played the piano and organ for many years, sang in the senior choir, a member of the missionary society, loved Sunday school, and was honored as "mother" of the church.

For 31 years, she worked as a crossing guard for Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Department on Highway 27, Grand Avenue School and later DeQuincy middle school. Her gentle protection of the school children was one she cherished.

She was one who never gave up on a belief. For many years she lived with a saying, "Thank the Lord, things are as well as they are" and "ALRIGHT NOW". Two of her favorite songs, "The Lord will make a way" and "America the Beautiful." She still drove her car and mowed her grass at age 90. Her favorite time to mow the grass was noon day.

She is survived by son, Curtis (Alice) Brown of Elkhart, Indiana and Lily James Brown, Daughter- in-law of Houston, Texas, 9 Grandchildren, 23 Great-Grandchildren and, 4 Great-Great Grandchildren. Preceded in death by two sons, Madison and Charles Brown, one daughter, Evelyn Bradley, three sisters, Augustine Armstead, Aell Fisher, Martha Ann Buck, one brother, Jessie Gayden Jr, and one grandson, Howard Bradley.

Special thanks to her devoted nephews, nieces, and cousins for their unselfish devotion in making a difference in her life in so many ways. Thanks to the members of this church and the churches of the community for their kindness. Thanks also to the community in which she felt much love. Miss Sugar would often say, "There is no place like home." She finally called the DeQuincy Care Center home and thanks to all for your generous care.
