Obituary

"Allow the healing presence of God to shine in your life."

Alvis Montgomery Golden 90 years old, peacefully passed away on November 7, 2025, surrounded by her loving family and caregivers, after over ten years of several serious medical conditions. She was born on August 24, 1935, in Bernice, LA to the parents of Roosevelt and Mervielean Montgomery.

Alvis was educated in the public school system of Union Parish in North Louisiana, having attended Elliot Elementary School and graduating from Elliot High School, Class of 1953. She went on to attend Grambling University, graduating with a degree in Business Administration, Class of 1957. After graduation, she relocated to Lake Charles, Louisiana where she became employed by the Calcasieu Parish School Board. She worked as the school secretary at Washington High School and then was hired to teach Business for the next 20 years. She was instrumental in organizing the "CEO," getting Seniors ready for jobs. She had night classes, where she taught senior citizens who wanted to learn computer literacy.

It was while working at Washington High School that she met the love of her life, Alvridge Golden, Jr. They were married for 19 years, until his untimely passing in 1980.

Alvis was a Life Member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, she was initiated on May 25, 1963, in the Zeta Psi Omega Chapter in Lake Charles, Louisiana. During her 62 years in the sorority, she served in various leadership roles including: Secretary, Financial Secretary, Treasurer, Correspondence Secretary, Ivy Leaf Reporter, and Historian. Her home and wardrobe proudly displayed the pink and green colors of her beloved Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She was also a member of the National Breast Cancer Survivors Organization.

Her hobbies included watching every form of sports that was broadcast on both local and national affiliate stations. Her greatest hobby was spent watching and ordering the latest items of the day being presented by HSN, QVC, and JTV home networks. You name it and she had it!

For many years, Alvis learned how to navigate being a widow, and learning how to depend on her own ability to get things done that she needed at the time.

She shared responsibility with her brother, Freddie, who called every night at 10:50 p.m. Her other caregiver and road buddies were her sister-in-law, Loretta, and her nephew, James, who never let an opportunity to drive to Coushatta or L'Auberge pass by.

Alvis was a lifelong and faithful member of New Sunlight Baptist Church, having joined under the pastorship of Reverend V.E. Washington, and now leadership of Reverend A.L. Williams, II. She remained active until her health began to decline.

She was pre-deceased by her parents, her oldest brother, Rodell Montgomery; her husband, Alvridge Golden, Jr. and stepfather, William Matt Williams, Jr; and sister, Lucille Thompson.

Alvis is survived by her brother, Freddie Montgomery (Marie) of Shreveport, LA and stepbrother, Joseph Montgomery of College Station, TX; sisters-in-law, Alma Jean Montgomery of Bernice, LA, Elsie Golden Collier (Iggy) of Albany, NY; Barbara Golden Walker (Tony) of Oakland, CA, Loretta Golden Wilkins of Lake Charles, LA, Tomasine Turner Golden and Barbara Golden both of Houston, TX. Special Cousin, Maeotis Andrew of Bernice, LA; Godchildren, Clyde Wilkins, Jr., and Geri Vital both of Lake Charles, LA; and a host of nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends.

"Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father's house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for your, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am." John 14:1-3
