Kennedy Sr
September 14, 1920 – July 25, 2015
Dr. Amos Paul Kennedy Sr., 94, was born Sept. 14, 1920, in Hosston, La. He was the eldest son of the late Mary and Frank Kennedy. He graduated from Bossier Parish Training School and C.H. Irion High School. While attending Southern University, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. After being discharged from the army, he returned to Southern University and graduated with a B.S. degree. He obtained a PhD from Michigan State University in 1955 and did a post-doctorate in 1963. He was a professor and chairman of the chemistry department at Grambling State University. He was also a professor at North Carolina A&T State University and Maryland State University. He was Director of the Brookhaven Semester Program, which was founded in 1968. The purpose of the Brookhaven Semester Program was to encourage college juniors and seniors to do scientific research at Brookhaven National Laboratory, Upton, Long Island, N.Y. He was member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Beta Kappa Ki and the American Chemical Society.
While at Southern he met and married Helen A. Davis, from this union five children were born. Amos was a devoted husband, father and a lifelong educator.
He is survived by his wife, Dr. Helen A. Kennedy; daughter, Gloria (Cheryll) Kennedy of Brooklyn, N.Y.; sons, Arlander (Cheryll) Kennedy of Lake Charles, La., Amos (Ernestine) Kennedy of Detroit, Mich., Dr. Alan (Mary) Kennedy of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Dr. Alvin (Sharon) Kennedy of Baltimore, Md. He also had 11 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and many relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Alvin Preston Kennedy.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Dr. Amos

SERVICE INFORMATION
Service date: August 1, 2015
A memorial service will be held on Aug. 1, 2015, from 9 to 11 in Combre Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends from 9 a.m. until time of service at 10 a.m. Cremation has been entrusted to Combre Funeral Home.
