IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Bernice
George
May 18, 1926 – August 18, 2024
Bernice George was born May 18, 1926, to Eva Zeno and Phillip George, Sr. She became Eva's third daughter alongside her sisters Cora, Millie and younger brother Walter.
Her family moved from Scott, Louisiana, to Lake Charles, Louisiana, in the mid-1930s. The family joined Christian Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of Rev. W. C. Clark. In 1937, at eleven years old, Bernice, alongside the congregation, sang hymns and walked down Jackson Street to the Calcasieu River (behind the old rice mill) to be baptized. Bernice was deeply rooted in her faith, and as a lifetime member of Christian Baptist Church, she flourished under the spiritual leadership of Dr. W. C. Clark and diligently served under previous pastors, including Rev. Al G. Stevens, Rev. Abbie Monroe, Jr., and her current pastor, Rev. Edward Alexander, Jr. until her health became challenged to attend. At 98 years old, Sis. Bernice George was the eldest female member of the Christian Baptist Church.
She expressed her faith by singing in the Gospel Choir, serving as a member of Circle #5, and working wherever a helping hand was needed. She enjoyed shopping for the church's "Good Friday picnics" at the Rocquemore Center. While growing up in Lake Charles, she became an extension of her Mother, Eva, and embraced extended family, relatives, and those starting anew.
Bernice's life was defined by a series of simple walks, putting one foot in front of the other without any fanfare or fuss. She lived her life simply by walking; she walked nearly everywhere. She took long walks to the homes of families she worked for and her domestic positions at the Majestic and Charleston Hotels.
There were also her walks along the hallways of the Surgery Department of St. Patrick's Hospital (now known as Christus St. Patrick Hospital), where she retired as a Housekeeping Night Supervisor in 1988 after twenty-seven years of service. She walked to the physician's offices of Drs. Phillips and Campbell, which she also cleaned. Most importantly, she walked across the railroad tracks with her children every Sunday for worship service and to their weekly appointments. Her daily walks were an uncomplicated, practical picture of who she was, her work ethic, her faith, and her desire to provide for her children.
While raising her children, Leonard, Albert, Jerry, and Cora, she valued family bonds and a clean and tidy home and encouraged reading, often buying books for birthdays and Christmas. During her retirement, she served her family by babysitting grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed simple afternoons, watching her favorite game shows with her snacks.
Sis. Bernice George departed this life for eternal rest on Sunday, August 18, 2024, surrounded by love. She was preceded in death by her parents, Eva Zeno and Phillip George, Sr.; four sisters, Cora Jones Horn, Millie George Johnson, Evelyn Williams, and Rose Sias; two brothers, Walter Anderson and Phillip George, Jr.; her great-granddaughter, Indigo Perkins; and extended Sons, Lynn Ervin and Ronald Jones.
Her memory will forever be cherished by her daughter, Cora (Charles) Brown; three sons, Leonard (Theresa) Perkins, Albert (Sharon) Jones, and Jerry Glenn (Earslee) George; extended children, Kim Pete, Kenneth (Cynthia) Jones, Keith (Mary) Jones, and Patrick (Audrey) Peters; children from the Heart, Calton, Ivory, Nathan, John and Joseph Stevens.
Affectionately known as "Muh", "Gramma," or "Grams", she leaves a legacy of ten grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and eleven great-great-grandchildren.
Additionally, by God's grace and lovingkindness, she leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
