Obituary

Bernice Harris Guidry 91 of Lake Charles, La. Passed away peacefully on August 21, 2019 at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital. Bernice was a native of Memphis Tenn. It was while serving her country in the WAC Detachment B, 1262 nd A.S.U., in Fort Dix, New Jersey, that she met and married the love of her life, her husband of 64 years, Louis Guidry.

Bernice was no stranger to work. She taught 2 nd grade at Our Mother of Mercy Church in Church Point and later became a hair dresser specializing in "waves and pin curls" using a straightening comb. After her children graduated from High School, Bernice furthered her education by attending "USL" for a time and later attended the vocational and technical school in Crowley, La earning her LPN license. She had aspirations of obtaining her RN degree but life took a different turn for her. As an LPN, she was a dedicated worker having worked at the nursing home in Crowley and then in Lake Charles until her retirement. Even after retirement, Bernice's sense of duty led her to become an election commissioner in Calcasieu Parish, La.

Bernice's life exemplified to her kids the meaning of perseverance despite life's challenges. She never complained.

Bernice was preceded in death by her parents Dan and Mary Thompson Harris, her husband, Louis Guidry, her grandson Daniel Hawthorne Guidry, her siblings Dan Harris, Clifton Harris, Barbara Ann Harris, and Barbara Jean Tucker. She is survived by her children Donald Louis Guidry Sr., (Lake Charles, La.), Desiree (Lloyd) Dangerfield (Lafayette, La.), Nathaniel "Nate" Guidry (Pittsburg, Pa.), Rachel (Stephen) Gordon  (Queens, NY.), and a niece whom she reared as her own Earon Harris (Sierra Vista, AZ.), 8 grandchildren, Donald Louis Guidry Jr. Erica (Ron) Warner, David Michael Guidry, Aaron Michael Dangerfield, Jacquelyn Chetram, Stephanie Gordon, Shontwanique (Tony) Lee and Kenneth (Jessica) Harris, 4 great grandchildren Natalie and Noah Warner and Lavelle and Latrell Lee, her brother-in-law and sister-in-law Herman and Ruby Guidry and a host of nieces and nephews.
