Obituary

Daryl Joseph January, (DJ) age 61, earned his angel wings from our Lord on Thursday, January 13, 2022 at 4:22 pm.  Daryl was born in Creole, LA on October 23, 1960. He was a gift from GOD that his parents, the late Richard      Joseph and Jessie Lee (Griffin) January always wanted. He was the oldest of two with a little sister just a couple of years younger than him that answered to the name of Benita and affectionally called by Daryl "BEESLY BIRD."

Daryl attended New Sunlight Daycare Kindergarten and upon graduation he enrolled at Sacred Heart of Jesus  Catholic School, then Rosteet Junior High School, and then he attended Marion High School, where he played the saxophone in the band under the leadership of Henry "Huck" Thomas. He loved learning everything he could and also played the piano by ear. He graduated in "1978" with honors. Upon graduating from high school he attended the University of Southwestern Louisiana of (Lafayette). After the death of his grandfather, Sherman Griffin Sr. he moved to Los Angeles, CA. He graduated from El Carmino College (Torrance, CA) with an Associate of Science  degree in Computer Systems Networking and Telecommunications. He then attended the University of California, Dominguez Hills, in Los Angeles, CA, Daryl worked in theater productions as a lighting and sound technician on the side but was gainfully employed by the Los Angeles Unified School District as a Data Reporting Systems Trainer II. Daryl was determine to work for the industries of his hometown so upon returning home over 12 years ago, he enrolled at SOWELA Technical Community College, he received Rodbuster and Journeyman Certificates. Daryl was then employed by CB&I and LNG in both Cameron and Westlake, LA.

Daryl had a passion for reading God's word, skating (hip-hop style), biking, skiing, writing poetry, playing games with family and friends, and hanging with his seasoned people.  He even enjoyed cooking, baking, and a good food challenge. He listened to KLOVE and looked at Hallmark movies, but what he liked the most was watching gameshow network with his little sister, because when she couldn't figure out the answer he could. He loved  working with his Uncle J in Shreveport, LA. He really enjoyed going to the games and sporting events with Pop Leonard Broussard. Mowing yards, as well as trimming trees and hedges with Mr. Grady Caine, was a joy also and he even loved coming to the rescue for Mom Rose Malveaux and Mom Billie Williams for whatever they needed.

Daryl's major achievement was surrendering and coming to the Lord Jesus Christ when he returned home and to his home church, Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.  He surrendered his will, his life, and vices and     received Jesus as his Lord and Savior and His healing power. His life and his relationships transformed.  His family relationships, his sister and nephew, became stronger. The love of God and His Word lived through Daryl.  He was a friend to the young and to the seasoned.  A helper, an encourager, motivator, "cheerleader" to all, and especially to his adult nephew, Gavin--that's how he is described. That's how Daryl impacted his world….by his love, his    kindness, his smile, his help, and his profession of his love of God. And they'll know we are Christians by our love. (song, Fr. Peter Scholtes. 1966)

Daryl is survived by his sister, Benita January; nephew, Gavin January both of Lake Charles, LA; Godmother who is also his Aunt Wilma (Harold) Manyweather, Uncle Willie (Beverly) Griffin, Aunt Cathy Newman, Uncle Jimmy Newman, Uncle Sherman (Dandrea) Griffin, Uncle Robert E.
