Dorothy May Brown was born March 29, 1928 to the late Ivory and Juanita Brown in Algiers, Louisiana. Mrs. Beatrice Miller, whom she affectionately called, "Aunt Bea" reared her ..Growing up, education was paramount to her. She graduated at the age of 16 years old from L. B. Landry High School. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in French and English from Southern University and a Masters of Education from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, a Master''s Degree and 30 Plus Educational Specialist Degree from McNeese State University, Lake Charles, Louisiana. West Virginia University was where she received certification to teach Spanish.

Mrs. Broussard served professionally as a French and English teacher at W. O. Boston High School. Her influence and encouragement led many of her students to college and to rewarding careers, nationally and internationally. When she started teaching, she was younger than some of her students. She was the only faculty member to remain atW. O . Boston throughout the duration of the school.

After 36 years of service, Mrs. Broussard retired from the Calcasieu Parish School System having taught English, French, Spanish and having served as a Guidance Counselor and Adult Education Teacher. Her love the classroom awarded her the opportunity to serve as the 1st Coordinator of the Upward Bound Tutorial Program and to work with the state''s Church Based Tutorial Program for expelled and suspended Calcasieu Parish students.

In 1956, Dorothy May Brown became Mrs. Herbert Broussard. Their union was blessed with the birth of two children, Kevin David and Carol Denise.

Through the years, Mrs. Broussard has been the recipient of numerous honor, awards and leadership positions. She was Past President of the Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated and Lake Charles Pan Hellenic Council, charter member and former Secretary of the Lake Charles Chapter of Top Ladies of Distinction and Coordinator of Community Action Teen Summit.

St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church was her church in which she loved and the church showed great love, care and compassion toward her. She was devoted to St. Paul in serving as the Young People''s Division Director, President of the L. B. Brown Women''s Missionary Society, Stewardess and Trustee Board. Her service continued in numerous capacities at the district, conference and episcopal district levels. Mrs. Broussard represented her local church byserving as a delegate to the Central Louisiana Annual Conference. Recognition of dedication and outstanding leadership to the Central North Louisiana Conference Women''s Missionary Society was awarded to her in 2014 as a Leader and Legends Legacy Award.

Mrs. Broussard transitioned from earth to heaven, Friday, January 30, 2015.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ivory and Juanita Brown, her surrogate mother, Mrs. Beatrice "Aunt Bea" Miller, husband, Herbert Broussard, and daughter, Carol Denise Broussard-Charles.

Watkins of Houston, TX, Natalie M Broussard of Baton Rouge, LA, Nicholas I. Broussard of Lake Charles, LA, Joshuwa C. Broussard of Lenoir, N.C.; Great Grandchildren, Madison R. Watkins, Brayden J. Watkins, Carlon M. Watkins and Cambree D. Jean, all of Lake Charles, LA; sisters, Joyce B. Nixon of Washington, D.C., and Gloria (Henry ) Deeds of Detroit, MI; Sisters-in-law, Charlene Broussard of Lake Charles, LA, Linda (Lawrence) Hagger of Houston, TX and Lola Broussard of Lake Charles, LA ; brothers-in-law, Howard Broussard of Port Arthur, TX, Leonard G. Broussard and Donald R. Broussard , both of Lake Charles. LA. and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

SERVICE INFORMATION

Service date: February 9, 2015

Her funeral will be on Monday, February 9, in St. Paul A.M.E Baptist Church starting at 11am, Burial will be in Combre Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Combre Funeral Home. Visiation is from 8am Monday in the church.
