Obituary

Evelyn Marie Dumas Lewis (affectionately known at "T. T." to all who knew her) entered her life journey on September 30, 1934 in Lake Charles, Louisiana. She was the youngest of three children and the only girl born to the union of the late Almeta Trahan Dumas and the late Horace James Dumas.

She was baptized into the Catholic faith as an infant. Evelyn received her Sacraments of the Catholic Faith through Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church. She was a former member of the St. Rita Court #31 of the Ladies Auxiliary. She was active into church functions in her earlier years, especially those that involved the youth. She chaperoned the church dances for the youth and worked the concession stand during baseball seasons.

Evelyn completed school in Lake Charles. She met and married her lifelong companion, Irving Joseph Lewis of Church Point, Louisiana on March 21, 1954. To their union, six children were born: Horace James, Ronald Keith, Shelia Marie, the late Charles Anthony, Tony Gerard, and Kathy Ann. She lived to share 59 years of marriage.

During her years of employment, Evelyn worked as a Surgical Scrub Technician for Christus St. Patrick Hospital. She terminated her employment with the hospital when her mother became ill. When she returned to work, she was employed with Bell South Telephone Company as a Custodian. She also worked as a Domestic Engineer for several attorneys and physicians through the years. She worked and took care of her family until she was stricken by Multiple Sclerosis several years ago.

Evelyn was a dedicated and faithful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend. No one was a stranger to her. She was always willing to help others, even if it meant giving her very last. She "inherited" children through the years. She became "Mom" to all who came around. As Evelyn stated right before she went to meet our Heavenly Father, "I have done all I could do. There is nothing here left for me. I have taken care of my children, my grandchildren, and I have had a chance to see some of my great-grand children. My work here is done." On Monday, April 29, 2013 at 3:12 PM, Evelyn departed this worldly life to be an angel with our Lord. In her death, she demonstrated what true faith and courage was.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, Almeta Trahan Dumas and Horace James Dumas; two brothers, Joseph Dumas and Andrew Dumas, Sr.; one son, Charles Anthony "Swamp" Lewis; one grandson, Ronald Keith Lewis, Jr.; four uncles, Columbus, Dalton, and Herbert Trahan, and Edward Flood; one aunt, Theresa Trahan Flood; her grandparents; five sisters-in-law; three nephews, and one niece.

Evelyn leaves lasting, heart-felt memories with her husband of 59 years, Irving Joseph Lewis of Lake Charles, Louisiana; three sons, Horace James Lewis, Sr. and Tony Gerard Lewis of Lake Charles, Louisiana; and Ronald Keith Lewis, Sr. of Bellflower, California; two daughters, Shelia Marie (Michael Beasley) Hopkins and Kathy Ann (Stevens Thomas) Lewis-Jackson of Lake Charles, Louisiana; an "inherited" daughter, Doryce Polk of Natchitoches, Louisiana; a grandson whom she raised as a son, Nathan Demone Syas of Lake Charles, Louisiana; 23 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; two aunts, Georgia Trahan and Olivia Trahan of Lake Charles, Louisiana; two sisters-in-law, Enola Carrier of Church Point, Louisiana and Luverta DeBoest of Lake Charles, Louisiana; two brothers-in-law, Joseph Citizen and Adam DeBoest of Lake Charles, Louisiana; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
