Obituary

Florce Joseph Floyd, Sr. was born January 27, 1923 in Loreauville, Louisiana to the late Edmonia Lawrence and Robert Floyd. Mr. Floyd departed this life and gained his heavenly wings on June 9, 2016.

He attended Sacred Heart School then later went on to serve his country through the United States Navy. He was a devoted member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church for over 70 plus years.

Mr. Floyd was the second Local Elected President of the Lake Charles Branch of the NAACP. He served as the chairperson of membership for the state. He will be fondly remembered as the President who served the longest tenure of the local branch. He received numerous awards including the 2010 "Charles A. Downing Humanitarian" award for his selfless devotion and lifelong service to the disadvantaged citizens of Southwest Louisiana. His name was added to the Wall of Tolerance in Montgomery, Alabama in recognition of an important contribution to the ongoing fight against hatred and intolerance in America and to provide inspiration to all those who choose to take a stand against hatred.

He was an outstanding basketball player with an untouchable hook shot. Due to his exceptional skills, the Harlem Globetrotters wanted to recruit him, but his father felt he was too young to leave home to pursue his basketball dream. Over the years, he would still pick up a basketball here and there and play with his family and friends.

He was a lifetime member of the NAACP branch. He was also a member of the VFW and Post 551 American Legion.

Mr. Floyd is survived by his loving wife, Hazel Floyd of seven years; four daughters Betty, Rosie, Ethel Marie, and Bernadette; one son Jay; two stepdaughters CaTina and Cherie; and one stepson Cedric (Celeste); and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Floyd and Edmonia Lawrence; first wife of over 60 years Ethel Guidry-Floyd; four brothers Irving, Ernest, Clarence, and Ward; and three sisters Ethel Guidry, Lizzie Landry and Florence Fontenot.
