The Faith of a true servant

Sister Geneva Mouton Laws, age 91, was born in Cameron, La. on Sept. 15, 1926 to the late John Cass and Lucinda Bartie Mouton. While at her residence, she received her call and entered into eternal rest peacefully on Thursday, Feb. 15, 2018. Geneva departed this life to her new address in Heaven.

She was united in marriage to Earnest Laws in 1957, to this union they had one loving son, Timothy J. Laws, they both preceded her in death. They also owned and operated Laws Cafe.

She was reared in a very strong Christian family filled with love for the Lord and one another. She was faithful and dedicated to the command of a "servant Heart" using her gifts in tireless and continuous service, supporting whatever and where ever she was needed.

Geneva was a faithful member and served at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church. She later moved her membership to Messiah Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the Rev. Robert L. Owens where she had served as Church Secretary, member of the Finance Committee, Sunday School Teacher, Director of the Tutorial Programs, Pastor's Aid Committee, Robert L. Owens Health Benefit Committee, Teacher for New Members Orientation and Past President of Women's Mission Union.

During her committed and servant hood life, she has served The New Light Missionary and Educational Association as recording Secretary and Vice President of the Women's Mission Union. The Louisiana Home and Foreign Mission as Secretary for the Congress. She has served as a teacher to both the National Baptist Convention of America and the American Baptist College. She was a member of the Lake Charles Chapter of the Top Ladies of Distinction, Incorporated. She was also in Voices of Zion Community Choir in Lake Charles.

Geneva graduated from Sacred Heart High School and was a retired educator of Calcasieu Parish School System. Her teaching career expanded over three decades. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Texas Southern University, May 1956 and her Master's of Education from McNeese State University, May 26, 1964. In addition she received her 30 plus hours. She taught in Cameron Parish at B. Moore, Washington High School and F.K. White Middle School. After retirement from Calcasieu Parish, she taught at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic School. She was a devoted teacher who inspired each of her students to be the best they could be.

She was preceded in death by her loving parents; sisters, Viola Singleton, Catherine Holmes, Susie LaSalle, Mary Savoy, Emma Lois Mouton; brothers, Robert, Joe, John, Kenneth, and the Rev. Roland Mouton, Sr.
To cherish the memories of her fulfilled life of 91 years are her grandchildren, Jasmyne Johnson of Lake Charles and Jamaal Johnson of Detroit, Mich. Great-grandchildren, Je'Leyah, Markhajah, Logan, Marianna all of Lake Charles, De'Andre of Atlanta, Ga.; two sisters-in-law, Louvenia Mouton and Oletha Mouton. Godchildren, Solom Savoy Sr., and the Rev. Roland Mouton Jr.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
