Gilbert Vernon Mayo Sr. passed away on Thursday, March 26, 2020 surrounded by family. Gilbert was born August 28, 1929 to Emile Mayo and Aria Milburn Mayo in Bayou Teche LA. Gilbert Vernon accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age at Green Chapel Methodist Church where he remained a member until moving to Lake Charles and becoming a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church.

Gilbert married Shirley Rosette in 1951 and to this union of 62 years, nine children were born.  Gilbert worked for Acme Brick as a machine Operator until his retirement. Gilbert and Shirley who he affectionately called "Hun" spent their golden years working on honey do projects, watching CNN, debating on current events, sharing family history, traveling to Opelousas to visit family and friends and doting on their children and grandchildren.

Gilbert was preceded in death by his wife Shirley Rosette Mayo, two sons Gilbert Vernon Mayo Jr. and Adrian Christopher Mayo; two daughters Linda Gail Mayo and the Honorable Dianne Marie Mayo; one grandson Marcus Wayne Mayo; his parents; and 11 siblings.

Gilbert leaves to cherish his memory his three loving daughters, Deborah Garriet (Larry Hawkins), Constance Mayo of Lake Charles, LA. and Latricia Mayo of Opelousas LA.; One honorary daughter Mathilda Rigmaiden of Lake Charles, LA.;  Two sons, Dr. William Mayo and Patrick Mayo of Lake Charles, LA. ; one Brother Donald Mayo (Georgianna) and two sisters Anna Fredricks, and Emmaline Mayo, and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and longstanding family friends.
