Obituary

Godfrey Wayne Weston, the third son and child of Elijah Sr. and Zerline Nickerson Weston, was born on January 22, 1951. His peaceful journey home began on June 17, 2024.

From his early years, Wayne was deeply rooted in his faith. He was baptized as an infant and later, when he was of age, he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. A lifelong member of New Emanuel Baptist Church, he was a regular attendee of Sunday School, Bible study, and a dedicated member of the Choir until his health declined. He also served as a deacon for a brief period.

1969 Wayne graduated from W. O. Boston High School at the top of his class. That same year, he earned a superior rank at the state high school choir competition as a baritone soloist.  At that time, the choir was directed by Mrs. Mary Lou Chavis (Jones). After graduation, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy. He was stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on USS Davidson-DE 1045. Wayne served as a ship's serviceman in 3rd class for four years. Honorably discharged in August 1973, Wayne returned to Lake Charles. In the fall of that year, he enrolled in McNeese State University and, for two years, majored in Business Administration.

In June 1976, Wayne joined the Lake Charles Fire Department and worked there for 36.5 years. On the fire department, he was known for his honesty, fairness, and gumbo. Among a small circle of friends, there were pig feet and tripe. Upon retirement in December 2012, Wayne was ranked as a District Fire Chief.

Also, on October 9, 1976, he married Doretha Waters, and to that union, two children were born: Bettina Arnelle Weston of Houston, Texas, and Jerome Avery Weston, currently living in Lake Charles, LA.

He is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Larry Anthony Weston and Elijah Weston, Jr.

Besides his wife and children, he leaves to mourn his son-in-law, Dewayne Deion Hayes and one grandchild (Pop's Baby Girl) Braelynn Avery Hayes of Houston, TX; his sisters, Winifred Herbert Latigue of Lake Arthur, LA, Donna Herbert (Ronald) Simon and Cassandra (Timothy) Joseph; a special aunt, Mary Louise Nickerson all of Lake Charles, LA; a special uncle, David Weston of Chicago, IL; and a special friend, Stanley S. Phelps of Houston, TX; sisters-in-law, Irene Weston, Carrie Waters, and Cynthia Hawkins all of Lake Charles, LA, Mary Waters Franklin of Seattle, WA and Brenda Waters of Baton Rouge, LA; brothers-in-law, Carver Waters, Reginald (Wanda) Waters and Ray Garza all of Lake Charles, LA; his godson, Anthony (Yolanda) Weston of Pensacola, FL; and his goddaughter, Michele Weston of Lake Charles, LA; cousins, Floyd (Bobbi) Weston, Reverend Herman (Carol) Weston, Michael (Grace) Nickerson, David (Diane) Nickerson, Sidney Kane, Glenn Nickerson; special neighbors, Lankton and Pat Doucet,  and Wesley and Shatira Citizen, and Joseph Citizen. He also leaves a host of loving cousins, nieces, and nephews, and friends, especially from Ward 3 Recreation Center, too numerous to name.
