IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Hammond Brooks
Dejean Jr.
December 10, 1955 – January 3, 2022
Hammond Brooks Dejean, Jr. was born on December 10, 1955, the sixth of twelve children to Hammond
Brooks Dejean, Sr. of Lake Charles, LA. and Lovey Ophelia Arbuthnot Dejean of Centerville, MS.
Hammond earned his heavenly wings in his home on Monday, January 3, 2022, at 6:57 p.m. with family
members by his side. He was a lifelong resident of Lake Charles, LA. He was educated in the Calcasieu
Parish School System and graduated from Lake Charles High School in 1973 then attended McNeese State
University.
Hammond was known as "Star" as he was fondly called by family and friends alike. But to others he was
also called Daddy, Pop, Paran, Pop Frog, Frog, Hamm, Hammon' Jr., and Uncle Hammond and he happily
answered to them all. Hammond joined his mother at Piccadilly on Ryan Street as a dishwasher and then
eventually became a pastry chef. He loved cooking and baking. Whenever there was a family gathering
around his parents' home on Blake Street, it was guaranteed that Star was going to walking around with
one of his Family Reunion aprons on manning the pit (sometimes his "fire got away from him").
Hammond has always had a passion for music, so he pursued his dream by relocating to Atlanta where he
became a DJ known as "DJ Shining Star." He eventually returned to the city and worked in many night
clubs throughout the city and surrounding towns as well as wedding receptions, special events, and
parties. He started working for the Calcasieu Parish School Board as a custodian at Brentwood
Elementary School. His love of helping the students and giving back to the community led him to become
the head coach of the Brentwood Eagles football team and basketball team.
Hammond joined his father, the late Bro. Hammond Brooks Dejean, Sr. at Evergreen Baptist Church
making a public declaration of his love for the Lord by accepting Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and
Savior. He proudly served as a choir member, and on the hospitality committee, he was a regular worker
with Vacation Bible School every summer, he attended/taught Sunday School and drove the church van
among other duties as a servant of the Lord. During the summer he was an active participant of the
Baptist Youth Encampment. He became a deacon 'of Evergreen Baptist Church on July 21, 2019. Hammond was an active and dedicated member at Evergreen Baptist Church until his health declined, which prevented his attendance. Hammond kept his faith in God until he was called home.
Those he leaves behind to continue his celebration of life, and to cherish his memories are four brothers,
Dan Alec (Norma) Arbuthnot, Sr., Hilbert George' Dejean, Haywood James (Kathy) Dejean, Sr. and Harvey
