Obituary

Hattie B. Olivier, 78, of Lake Charles, Louisiana, passed away peacefully on September 2, 2025. Born June 28, 1947, at Charity Hospital in Shreveport, Louisiana. She was the daughter of the late John Persley Sr. and Estella Lawrence Persley.

Hattie was the third of eight children, yet she naturally stepped into the role of nurturer amongst her siblings. When her father was stationed in California, the family joined St. John Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as asst. preacher. If not at church, Hattie could be found helping her mother prepare meals for visiting Pastors, family, and guests. That gift of service and hospitality would follow her throughout her life.

After returning to Shreveport, Hattie later decided to join her older sister Barbara in San Francisco, where she met the love of her life, Roumay Olivier Jr., a fellow Louisiana native and Navy veteran. Roumay, then a city bus driver, would regularly alter his route to see her, offering her free rides and his heart. Their romance blossomed, and the two got married, eventually settling in Lake Charles to raise their family.

Hattie and Roumay's home became the heart of countless gatherings. Known for her extraordinary baking, neighborhood children lovingly dubbed her the "Neighborhood Betty Crocker," as her kitchen was always filled with warmth, sweetness, and plenty of food to share. With her radiant smile and quick wit, she could discipline and uplift in the same breath. Among family, she earned the affectionate title "Hurricane Hattie" for her firm-but-fair parenting style, scattering a room like a storm if chores weren't done—only to finish with love and a hot plate of food.

Her life was a balance of devotion: to the Lord, to her children, grandchildren, extended family, and her remarkable 53-year marriage. Hattie's legacy is one of STRENGTH, creativity, laughter, and unwavering love.

She is survived by her sons Roumay Olivier III, Schuyler Ray Olivier, and Michael Dion Olivier; stepdaughter Renae' Brownlee; siblings John Persley Jr., Barbara Persley Morgan, James "Jimmy" Persley, Garfield Persley, Bonita Persley Russell, and Annice Persley Stokes; daughters-in-law Shavon, Tammara, and Devin Olivier; son-in-law Dwight Brownlee; and grandchildren Christopher and Anthony Heard, Jonelle Brownlee, Arlan, Aubree, Aiyahna, Sydney, Simone, Maddox, Marleigh, Mila, Dylann Olivier, and Skyler Captain.

Hattie was preceded in death by her parents, John and Estella Persley, her husband, Roumay Olivier Jr., daughter, Eboni Olivier Perkins, grandson, Hunter Keith Perkins, sister, Jannie Persley Guiden, and nephew, Garfield "PJ" Persley.

She Often Reminded Her family, "Never Let Them See You Sweat" And "The Beat Goes On."

Never to be outdone, she reminds her sons, I love you, and you love me too, but remember I loved you FIRST! And will always be with you.

Her visitation will be on Saturday, September 20, 2025 at 10:00 A.M. in New Life Church International, with funeral service immediately following at 11:00 A.M. Interment will be in Combre Memorial Park under the direction of Combre Funeral Home.
