Hazel Augustine Williams, age 89, passed away peacefully at her daughter's residence on June 1, 2019. She was born December 27, 1929 in Biloxi, Mississippi. She was baptized at Our Mother of Sorrows Church in Biloxi, Mississippi. She attended and graduated from Sacred Heart High School. She went on to receive her BA degree from Xavier University, BS Degree from Grambling University and a M. ED from McNeese State University. She did further studies at the University of New Orleans and Northwestern University. She was affectionately called "Red" by her peers in her heyday.
She began her teaching career in Sulphur where she taught at Frasch Elementary school. After leaving Frasch Elementary, she taught at Rosteet Elementary in Lake Charles, Louisiana. She was assigned to organize and teach in a Reading Lab at Sowela Tech under the supervision of the Adult Education Department. After retirement, Hazel taught at the following schools: Ralph Wilson, John J Johnson, JD Clifton, Sacred Heart, Combre, and Oak Park. She is best known for her role as a teacher, stern disposition, and her passion for teaching. She taught scores of children including multiple generations and adults. One of her greatest impacts was shaping the next generation of learners. She enjoyed good music, food, and dancing.
She was involved in several church and civic organizations. These included but not limited to Big Brothers and Sisters, Ladies Auxiliary of St Rita Court #31, Baton Rouge Chapter and Lake Charles Chapter of Xavier Alumni Associations, Sacred Heart Alumni Association where she served as Financial Secretary. She was also an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. and served in various leadership roles including Financial Secretary, Treasurer, Recording Secretary, and Chapter President and was a Golden Life Member. She went on to receive Delta of The Year Award in 1983 and Delta Public Service Award in 1979.
She was proceeded in death by her parents Martha Williams and George Williams, two sisters Catherine Kingsberry and Susie Castille, and her nephew Leonard Castille Senior. She is survived by her special aunt, Edith Sanders, favorite daughter, Stephanie Easton (Kaylon), nephews Charles Castille and Joseph Kingsberry, grandchildren, Stephen Easton, Kaylin Easton, and Solomon Easton and a host of cousins, great nieces and nephews. She may be gone but certainly not forgotten.
