IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Hinder Verdie
Mitchell
July 22, 1927 – July 27, 2016
Hinder Verdie "Modear" Mitchell, age 89, was born July 22, 1927 to Tom and Frances Mitchell in Port Barre, Louisiana. On Wednesday, July 27, 2016, the angels visited her in Harbor Hospice and carried Modear to her heavenly home.
Modear enjoyed her family and was well loved by family and friends. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She enjoyed spending time with and caring for her grandchildren and great grandchildren whom she showered with love. Modear loved making children smile. She was a devoted caregiver for her mother who preceded her in death.
Modear accepted the Lord at an early age and was a member of Old Emmanuel Baptist Church for over 50 years pastored by Reverend Mack Guillory.
She retired from McNeese State University. She loved sewing, cooking, and working in her yard. She taught children and grandchildren to be achievers. Modear would always say, "That the bottom is crowded, try to make it to the top". She believed in things being done the right way or she would say, "Don''t do it at all". Cleanliness was one of her pet peeves. You had to be dressed appropriately or she would say, "Where do you think you are going?" Family was a top priority. She loved to keep her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and would always ask them, "What do you want to eat?"
She was preceded in death by her parents, Tom and Frances Mitchell; daughter, Valrie Faye Johnson; two sisters, Dorothy Johnson and Lee Hester Carter; and two brothers; Louis Charles Mitchell and Samuel Mitchell.
Left to cherish her memories are her son, Roy (Diana Riley) Johnson of Lake Charles, Louisiana; six brothers, John "JC" (Hazel) Mitchell, Peter James Mitchell, and Cliff Mitchell, all of Houston Texas, Tom (Ella Mae) Mitchell of Beaumont, Texas, and Joshua (Virgie) Mitchell, and Floyd Mitchell of Lake Charles, Louisiana; three sisters, Candis Cains of Lake Charles, Louisiana, Abbie Lee Carter and Georgia Johnson of Houston, Texas; five grandchildren, Sonja (Tim) Wolfe, Tonja Johnson, Shanaya Shanklin, Scoie Green, and Wesley Johnson; seven great-grandchildren, Treniece Victorian, TraVal Shanklin, Christian Johnson, ShaMyra Deboest, TreVon Deboest, Lloyd Higginbotham, and Devin Higginbotham; one great-great-grandchild, Brantley Matthews; and several nieces, nephews, relatives and other friends.
