IN LOVING MEMORY OF
James T
Hollier Sr.
July 21, 1933 – July 2, 2025
James T "Yorkie" Hollier of Lake Charles, LA passed away on July 2nd, 2025 after a brief illness. He was born in his grandfather's house on July 21st, 1933 to Leroy Hollier, Sr and Victoria Granger Hollier in Prien Lake, in a small Creole community on the outskirts of Lake Charles, LA.
Yorkie grew up with his three brothers and sister on a farm in Prien Lake, raising cattle, hogs and horses as well as tending to the family's crops.
Because of his upbringing, Yorkie began to work when he was very young at the Lake Charles Country Club where he began as a Shoe Shine Boy and eventually worked up to Waiter and later Bartender.
Yorkie entered the armed services with the Navy, serving during the Korean War. After he served his country, Yorkie began to work with a local lumber yard and eventually began to work many years with his older brother at Solari Tile Company as a Tile Setter.
Yorkie was later hired at PPG Industries where he worked as a Lab Technician for 30 years until his retirement in 1996. Although he stopped working for Solari, Yorkie would continue to work as a Tiler Setter.
In 1958 Yorkie married the love of his life, Remanuel Sam. Their union lasted for almost 65 years, until Remanuel's passing in 2023.
Yorkie was an exceptional husband and father. It was rare for him to miss a game, meet, dance, recital, halftime show or parade. He later became a care giver to Remanuel for over 30 years after her health began to deteriorate.
Yorkie and his siblings worked on the farm for many years. He worked as a Pick-Up Man for local rodeos, remembering what Uncle Charlie taught him. Yorkie passed on his work ethics, stories, and history to his children and grandchildren. As one of the boys have often said, Daddy was the hardest Foreman I've ever had!
Yorkie helped set up for Mass every week which was held in his grandfather's house before St Martin DePorres chapel was established by Sacred Heart Church. He would often talk about going to neighbors with a wagon to pick up tables and chairs for mass. With Prien Lake having such a close-knit community, Yorkie's would go around the area to check the neighbor's fence and if it had a flag he would know someone needed groceries from town.
Yorkie was a longtime member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church where he was a Eucharistic Minister, homebound and hospital Eucharistic Minister, a member of Sacred Heart's Men's Choir, Gospel Choir, Senior Choir and Senior Citizen group along with being a member of the Knights of St. Peter Claver Council#31 .
Yorkie volunteered and donated for many church activities, including Sacred Heart's Bazaar where he and his children ran the Pony Rides, member of the Popcorn Ball committee and loved mowing the church grounds and various neighbors' yards, Dressing Too The NINES! and COOKING!
Daddy decided in his mid eighties to tell the story of his mother and published his memories.
Funeral services for Yorkie will be July 7th, 2025. Visitation will be at Combre's Funeral Home from 730-1045am and Mass at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church at 1100am.
