Obituary

Joyce Marie Hebert Patterson is the second daughter born to Junius and Irene (née Fils) Hebert, February 8, 1943 in Lafayette, Louisiana. She was the youngest of three children and the apple of her big brother Calvin's eye and the darling of big sister, Patricia. Joyce grew up in the Fisherville Community in Lake Charles from the age of eight years old, until adulthood. Joyce was reared in the Methodist Church tradition at Warren United Methodist Church under the guidance of her parents. She received her education at Second Ward Elementary and Washington High School where she graduated from in 1961. Her childhood was well spent with cousins Judy, Jane and Janet Fils and Robert David Mackey, along with a plethora of other cousins and friends.

Motherhood came early for Joyce as she gave birth to a sweet baby girl, Tammy Renee. Four years later came the birth of cutie pie Sonya Kim. Joyce was a doting mother who loved and cared for her children with everything in her! All "grown up", Joyce, better known by the family as "Pic", decided it was time for new horizons and headed westward to Houston, Texas where she met her future husband, Mr. Malcolm Barnes Jr.

A few years later, they ventured to Los Angeles, California and had two more children - a sweetheart of a son, Junius Malcolm and a kewpie doll of a daughter, Desiree Joyce and gained another daughter in Malcolm's, Demetrice.

Now the beginning of new adventures! Later years brought Joyce back to Houston and to her extended family. Her dear sisters-in-law and best friend Nobia, along with Maxine, Rita, Bridget and Vicki. It also brought another baby girl, sweet Hope Lynn. She began working as a sales associate at J. C. Penney and The White House Department Store for several years. This is where she met her lifelong friends; Abbie, Blanche, Ronnie, Michael and Hazel.

Then "you can always go home", which is what Joyce did when she returned to Lake Charles in her senior years. She began work through the Senior Employment Placement working with the organization Catholic Charities, then later the Senior Community Center, and later retiring from Calcasieu Parish Health Clinic.

Joyce rededicated her life to the LORD when she joined New Sunlight Baptist Church and reconnected with her family and favorite aunt - Eloise "Eunie" Edwards and ALL OF HER COUSINS!!😜😜😜 Joyce was ecstatic at the opportunity to serve as an usher at New Sunlight Baptist Church. There, Joyce's love to serve was rekindled. While living the High School Park community, she often assisted her "elderly neighbors" by cooking and cleaning for them. She often helped them with reading their mail, doing their taxes, and the like.

"Pic" was back home!

Joyce departed this life on Tuesday March 28th, 2023, at Harbor Hospice of Lake Charles. She leaves behind her loving kids, Tammy Renee Hebert of Houston TX; Sonya Kim Bush of Lake Charles, La; Junius Malcolm Barnes (Coletta) of Houston TX; Desiree Barnes Williams (Jimmy) of Houston TX; Hope Lynn Barnes Gaines (Fiancé- Ricky Semien) of Lake Charles; La; Demetrice Barnes Martin (Norris) of Houston, TX; eleven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her loving parents Mr. and Mrs. Junius Hebert; sister Patricia Hebert; brother Calvin Celestine and grandson JaVontae' Redding.
