Mildred Ozane Fontenot
April 30, 1935 – March 12, 2026

Mildred Ozane Fontenot was born on April 30, 1935, to Lawrence and Mildred (Victorian) Ozane in Lake Charles, Louisiana. She departed this earthly life on March 12, 2026, at the age of 90. Mildred spent her life devoted to her family and faith.

Affectionately known as “Sis,” she was the second-born and eldest daughter of Lawrence and Mildred (Victorian) Ozane. From an early age, she embraced the responsibilities customary for the eldest daughter, caring for her younger siblings and developing a fierce maternal instinct. She will forever be remembered as the “mother hen” of the Ozane family, fulfilling her role with determination, love and dignity.

Mildred retired from the Calcasieu Parish School Board, where she served at Moss Bluff Elementary School. A devoted member of St. Henry Catholic Church, her faith was a guiding force throughout her life. She delighted in cooking, fishing and attending zydeco dances. Her siblings, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren brought her immense joy and pride, and she created countless cherished memories with them.

Mildred was known for her delicious gumbo and smothered okra and sausage, as well as, treats that delighted nieces and nephews alike. Her love and warmth extended through every meal she prepared, every gathering she attended, and every life she touched.

She leaves to cherish her memory three daughters: Jean Marie Brown of Lake Charles, LA, Elsie Jean Jackson of Moss Bluff, LA, and Rosalie and Earl Ray of Lake Charles, LA; and three sons: William Lee Pitre of Lake Charles, LA, Leroy John Pitre of Kinder, LA, and Robert Lee and Cynarra Pitre, Sr. of Cheek, TX, as well as, two sisters: Rose Simien of Port Arthur, TX, and Josephine and Ike Celestine of Iowa, LA and two brothers: Lawrence and Vee Ozane, Jr. of Houston, TX and Terry Ozane of Jacksonville, FL.

Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Morris “Gibb” Fontenot; two daughters: Eva Pitre and Bobbie Jean Captain; one grandson, Henry Martin Jackson; her daughter-in-law, Donnie (Joubert) Pitre; son-in-law, Henry Lee Jackson; her parents, Lawrence and Mildred (Victorian) Ozane; brothers: Joseph, Gene, George, and Rudolph Ozane; and sisters: Ethel Dentley, Lorena Simien, and Georgiana Celestine.

Mildred’s life was a beautiful example of love, faith, and devotion to family. Her memory will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
