Mildred Carrier
Syas
April 8, 1913 – February 22, 2015
Mildred Carrier Syas, 101 years old, and a lifelong resident of Lake Charles, La., departed this life on Feb. 22, 2015.
She was the third oldest of eight, born on April 8, 1913, to the late Jessie and Julia Carrier. Mildred was a 1931 graduate of Phillis Wheatley High School in Houston, Texas. In 1938 she and married James C. (J.C.) Syas and was his devoted wife until his death in 1998. She was a faithful lifelong member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church. She is remembered as a Camp Fire Girl Leader when the organization initially reached out to the black community in the early 1960s. She was an active member of the Doretha A. Combre Business & Professional Womens Club where she received many honorary recognitions.
Mildred was a devoted mother of two surviving daughters, Gloria Banks Combre and Janis (Stanley) Syas-Porche, both of Lake Charles, La.
She is preceded in death by her sisters, Maude Alston, Flora Belle McKinney, Dorothy Lee Finley and Pearl Carrier; brothers, Howard Carrier, Jessie Carrier and Earl Carrier. She was also preceded in death by her son-in-law, Warren Combre; grandson, Eric Combre; and five nieces and nephews.
Survivors include her beloved granddaughters, Susan, Charlotte and Marsha Combre, all of Atlanta, Ga.; and her cherished grandsons, Warren (Carla) Combre II and Marcus (Hope) Combre, both of Lake Charles, La. Mildred continues her legacy with great-grandsons, Logan Fontenot, Gage Melanson, Nicholas and Joshua Combre, Joshua Porche; great-granddaughters, Samoan Combre, Kyia and Ashlea Porche; great-great-grandson, Gabriel Soto. She is also survived by nieces, Edith Carrier, Patti Page Rollins (Godchild) and Sharon Holley; nephews, Donald Howard, Fred Phillips and Stephen Carrier.
SERVICE INFORMATION
Service date: February 26, 2015
Visitation will be Thursday, Feb. 26, 2015, from 9 a.m. to 10:40 a.m. in Combre Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral will be Thursday, Feb. 26, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will be in Combre Memorial Park under the direction of Combre Funeral Home.
