Obituary

“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”

2 Timothy 4:7

Reverend Herman “Coach” Weston, affectionately known as "Moonbeam,” was born on August 3 in Lake Charles, Louisiana, to William and Goldie Weston. At an early age, he was baptized at Starlight Baptist church, where he became a faithful and active member. He later united with Mount Calvary Baptist Church, where he received his call to the ministry and preached his first sermon. In 1972, he was ordained as a minister, marking the beginning of a life devoted to both faith and service.

A proud native of Lake Charles, Reverend Weston was educated in the Calcasieu Parish School System. He attended Second Ward Elementary and graduated from W. O. Boston High School, where he became an outstanding all-star basketball player for the W.O. Boston Panthers. His remarkable contributions helped lead the Panthers to the State Runner-Up title in 1959, earning him well deserved All-State Honors.

Following high school, Coach Weston attended Southern University on a basketball scholarship, where he lettered for four years. He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Health and Physical Education in 1965. He later continued his studies at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, where he earned a Master’s Degree in Education with a concentration in Administration and Supervision.

Coach Weston dedicated thirty-six years to teaching and coaching at W.O. Boston High and Lake Charles Boston High School. During his distinguished career, he served as the boys’ head basketball coach, leading teams to two state championships; head girls’ basketball coach, winning one state championship; and girls’ track coach, where his teams captured fifteen consecutive district championships, multiple regional championships, and two state runner-up titles. Because of his extraordinary accomplishments and leadership, he was honored as “Coach of the Year” at both the district and state levels.

His love for teamwork, discipline and unity shaped not only his coaching career but also his spiritual walk. Reverend Weston’s first pastoral assignment was at Beech Grove Baptist church in DeRidder, Louisiana, where he served faithfully for several years. He was later called to pastor Zion Travelers Missionary Baptist Church in Iowa, Louisiana, where he served faithfully and passionately for over three decades. He led the congregation with vision, purpose and a deep commitment to Christ, guided by his motto: “Seeking the mind of Christ through the unity of the Spirit.

In addition to his pastoral leadership, Reverend Weston was actively involved in the Baptist Ministers Union and served as Vice President of the Calcasieu M&E Association. His influence in both the secular and spiritual realms left an enduring legacy of excellence, service, and faith.

He was united in marriage to Carol Allen Weston and together they built a loving family and were blessed with four wonderful children: Herman Weston Jr., Keri Weston Moore (Marcus), Netrice Weston Prunty, and Cheryl Weston. He also leaves behind a brother, Floyd Weston (Barbara), five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, all of who were a source of immense pride and joy.

Coach Weston enjoyed reading and studying his Bible, watching television-especially old Westerns and Sanford & Son-and was a devoted Pittsburgh Steelers and Los Angeles Lakers fan. He remained a loyal and passionate supporter of Southern University Jaguar football and basketball, carrying that Jaguar pride throughout his life.

Reverend Herman “Coach” “Moonbeam” Weston’s life was a beautiful example of faith, family, discipline and service. Through every season of life-as a husband, father, coach, educator, pastor and mentor-he touched countless lives and leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come.

His visitation will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2026 at 10:30 A.M. with funeral to follow at 11:00 A.M. in United Christian Fellowship Church. Interment will be in Combre Memorial Park under the direction of Combre Funeral Home.
