Richard Smith was born on January 2, 1929, in Opelousas, Louisiana, to the late Ida and Jimmy Smith. He passed away peacefully at his home on August 14, 2026, surrounded by his loving family, at the age of 97. Richard was one of five children and lived a long and meaningful life defined by faith, family, hard work, and service.

Richard proudly and faithfully served his country in both the United States Army and United States Navy, including service during the Korean War and World War II. His military service was one of his greatest sources of pride, and he remained proud of his service to his country throughout his life. After his military career, Richard continued his strong work ethic, spending 17 years with Conoco and later serving his community for 12 years with the Sheriff’s Department.

Richard found happiness in the simple things and especially enjoyed gardening, playing golf, sitting outside, and gathering around the table for Sunday meals with his family. He also enjoyed spending time at the Pryce Miller Community Center, where he loved playing bean bag and Spades. Anyone who played Spades with Richard knew that, according to him, he was the only one who knew how to play the game the right way—a memory that will continue to bring laughter and smiles to those who knew him.

Family was at the heart of Richard’s life. He was a devoted father and an especially loved grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather. The generations of family he leaves behind are a beautiful part of his legacy. Richard also expressed his faith in Jesus Christ, giving his loved ones comfort and hope through the faith he professed.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Ida and Jimmy Smith; his beloved wife, Leona Smith; his brothers, Leo Smith Sr. and James Smith; and his sister, Cevelia Smith. He leaves to cherish his memory his only surviving brother, Johnny “Ricky” Smith; his children, David Smith, (Lisa) Andrea Lewis, Shari Bellow (Hal) Bryan Smith, and Gary Smith; (Carlene) and his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews, along with extended family and friends who will forever cherish his memory.

Rest well, Grandfather . You have fought the good fight, finished your race, kept the faith, and now you are home.

Visitation for Richard Smith will begin at 8:00 A.M. with a Rosary at 9:00 A.M. on Saturday, August 22, 2026 in Combre Funeral Home Chapel. His funeral service will take place at 11:00 A.M. in St. Henry Catholic Church. Interment will be in Highland Memory Gardens with Military Honors under the direction of Combre Funeral Home.
