Shelton Piggee
Jr
November 14, 1945 – January 15, 2018
Shelton Piggee Jr. began his earthly journey on November 14, 1945 being born to the parentage of Shelton (Shelly) Piggee and Elnora Vick Piggee in Fort Smith, Arkansas. He was the fourth child of seven and the eldest son. At the age of 5, his mother passed away, and he and his siblings were adopted and reared by his maternal grandparents, Mr. Jake and Sarah DeGraftonreed in Pocola, OK.
On Monday evening, at 4:27pm, Shelton (affectionately called Buck by family and friends) earned is heavenly wings, when his tender heart stopped beating and made his transition. He had a heart of gold, a provider for his family and was always willing to help where needed.
He received his education in the Pocola Public Schools, Job Corps in Pleasanton, CA and Northern Oklahoma Jr. College, Tonkawa, OK. He was baptized at an early age at the Union Baptist Church, Pocola, OK under the leadership of Rev. White.
In 1975 he was married to Nancy Ruth Cochran and they established their home in Ponca City, OK. He was employed as the District Gauger, Northern Oklahoma for Continental Pipeline Company. He united with the St. John Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Campbell and later served many years under the pastorage of Rev. Levi Smith, as President of the Usher Board and Counsel for the Junior Ushers. This stewardship was close to his heart and his dedication was quite evident. He served as Worshipful Master of Webber Lodge #26 Prince Hall Grand Lodge F&AM Jurisdiction of Oklahoma Inc. and as Worthy Patron of Elizabeth T. Smith #40 Queen Bathsheba Grand Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, Oklahoma Jurisdiction Prince Hall Affiliate in Ponca City.
Shelton was an active participant in his daughters' sports activities, particularly the family favorite of softball. He served as coach and assistant coach of Kid's Inc Softball Program in Ponca City as well as Conoco volunteer activities. He was well known for serving his teams his secret recipe (from his dad) of smoked brisket. He was often known as the "Brisket Man" and also for sharing his childhood treat of moon pies.
Upon the family transferring to Lake Charles Louisiana in 1993, The family united with the Christian Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Abbie Monroe and Shelton continued his faithful service under the pastorage of Rev. Edward J. Alexander as an Usher and as a Counsellor to the Junior Ushers. He would be found at the door meritoriously until his health began to fail.
He continued his involvement in Softball as assistant coach with the College Oaks and Henry Heights Softball Programs and booster of the LaGrange Softball and LaGrange Band Programs. He was employed by Century Papers/ Georgia Pacific in Lake Charles and eventually owned and operated SP Delivery Service with a major contract with Sears until his retirement. During retirement, he was active with the Gulfgate Neighborhood Watch Program and leisurely playing dominoes/cards with the neighbors and friends. He opened a special transport/delivery service for his grandchildren Karis, Karson, and Karlyn to school, after school activities, sports practices and was the biggest spectator at their games.
He loved travelling, particularly by automobile, around the country visiting friends, family and making new adventures. He was especially passionate about family reunions and never wanted to miss any—whether it was the Arterberry, Durley, Gordon-Cooper, Cochran, Williams, Piggee, or Page-Vick-Hall. He cherished time with family and ensured there would be a jovial time enjoyed by all.
Shelton was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, one son, Michael; three sisters, Shirley Patricia, twin sisters, Lhonita Dewhart Brewer, and Whonita Piggee Dixon; two brothers, Scottie Wade Piggee, and Robert Thomas Sr., one niece, Tia Monique Piggee; one nephew, Joe Dixon and father-in-law Henry J. Cochran.
Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Nancy Ruth Piggee, four daughters, Shannon Neifer (Mike) of Henderson, NV; Pilar Piggee, of Pittsburgh, PA; Kris Piggee, Coppell, TX; Kanela Piggee Graham, of Lake Charles. Fifteen Grandchildren, Antonio, Alberto, Julian, Michael, Michaela, Giovanni, Tyrell, Triage, William, Raymone, Araya, Travele, Karis, Karson and Karlyn; Ten Great-Grandchildren.; One Brother, Robert (Tinker) Piggee of Des Moines, IA; His mother-in-law, Mrs. Bettye Cochran Fry, of Oklahoma City, OK; One Sister-In-Law, Mattie C. Piggee of Pocola, OK; Five nephews, Frank Dewhart, Sostane Brewer, Terrell Brewer, Robert Thomas Jr., Sean Thomas; Eight nieces including Elnora Michelle Dewhart and Stephanie Dixon and a host of great- nieces and nephews, cousins, including his childhood friend, Rev. Kenneth Gordon and extended family and friends.
Shelton never met a stranger and he will be remembered for his extroverted personality operating in the Four "Fs". Faith in God, Family, Friends, and Food.
