On Feb. 27, 1932, Verna Lee Dupre Gordon was born to the proud parents of Ethel Mae Dupre and Issac Jubert in Lake Charles, La. She received Christ as her Lord and Savior at the early age of 16 and joined Evergreen Baptist Church and was a member of the gospel choir. Growing up in Lake Charles, Verna attended Second Ward Colored School and graduated from W.O. Boston in 1951.
Verna met and married the love of her life, John Cilton (JC) Thomas Gordon, and to that union God blessed them with seven children (four girls and three boys). The family moved to the Washington, D.C./Maryland area where she worked at the Catholic University and the U.S. Post Office. In the early 1980s she returned to Lake Charles with her family to care for her mother. She joined Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church with her elder great-aunt and accepted her spiritual calling and mission. Verna was a devoted member of the church''s Sunday School Class #1, member of the Evangelistic Team, member of the church''s clothing committee and Women''s Mission Union (WMU).
Verna was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John C. Gordon Sr.; two sons, Kevin Thomas Gordon and Corey (DC) Gordon; mother, Ethel Banks; father, Issac Jubert.
Verna leaves to cherish her memories, her five children, Sharolyn Greene, Arlene Thompson, Pamela (Elbert) Thomas Dalton, Felicia Gordon and John (Agatha "Lucky") Gordon; goddaughters, Dianna Guillory, Barbara Chavis and Elaine Robinson; god granddaughter, Aenied Greene; six grandchildren, Glenn Thompson Jr., Teddy Greene, Toyya Greene (Jermaine Reed), Shawntaye Thomas Dalton, Ronlicia Gordon Falls and Ronald Falls Jr.; seven greatgrandchildren; and a host of other special relatives and friends.

Service date: December 12, 2015
Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church. Burial will be in Combre Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Combre Funeral Home. Visitation is from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday in the church.
