Sister Viola Bennett Roberson embarked her final excursion on December 1st 2012 42 PM at her residence. Her favorite comment when discussing her life was, "I've had a life well spent but now, there are more years behind me than in front of me."
Viola was born November 13th 1920 in Charenton, Louisiana. She was the first daughter born of ten children in that union. Viola accepted Christ at the age of nine. She was baptize and became a member of Good Hope Baptist Church in Baldwin, Louisiana. Being the oldest daughter, Viola assisted her mother in the daily upkeep of their home and the care of her siblings. In fact, she did not attend school until after all her chores were done. This was the norm for children at that time. She often made the family laugh when she told the story of the long walk to school and being late because of those chores and had to suffer the wrath of the teacher. Schooling was limited to the ninth grade because helping to assist in the raising of her brothers and sisters became full time. Violas parents, her six brothers and one sister preceded her in death. On August 10th 1940, Viola became Viola Bennett Roberson with the marriage to Raymond Roberson of Glenco, Louisiana. The marriage held firm for over fifty-four years until Raymond was called to eternal rest on April 14th
1993. During the union, six children were born and one of their daughters, Martha Ann, preceded them in death. In 1950, Viola and Raymond moved to Lake Charles. They bought their first home to raise the family. Viola joined Mt. Calvary Baptist Church of Lake Charles and became a faithful member under the leadership of Pastor D.J. Jones. She was a member of the Usher Board, the Mission Society and Sunday school. Several years later after the passing of Rev. Horace Allison, Viola joined Messiah Missionary Baptist church in Lake Charles, Louisiana. As Viola experienced a few changes that come with life, she moved to Newnan, Ga. in 2005 with her daughter Stell Johnson. Viola immediately joined Zion Hill Baptist Church under the pastorage of Rev. Willie Johnson. While at Zion Hill she continued her calling and love of being an usher. Of course attending Sunday school was also her love. Feeling a need to reconnect with her past in Lake Charles, Viola reached out to her church family at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church. The current pastor Rev. Elmore Garner extended a hand of welcome home" even

Viola sister Lucille Johnson shared many of Pastor Garner sermons with her that she looked forward to hearing. The relationship with Pastor Garner and the Church family became more important to Viola as her health started to fail and she no longer was able to attend church. She traveled throughout the country during her lifetime. Viola was an advisor to many. She was often sought out for her advice and words of wisdom. She was also a member of the Eastern Star and ACORN organizations.
She leaves a legacy of love to three sons; Harold ( Mary) of Lake Charles, La, Raymond( Ruby) of Menifee, Ca. and Louie James(Rita) of Covina Ca., three daughters Mary Boseman and Stell Johnson of Newnan,GA.,Dale Ann Bennett of Lake Charles, La. She has twenty-six grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren and twelve great, great grandchildren. Viola raised her nephew Larry Jones as her son and was a strong force in the raising of her neighbor Beulah Lee children, James Lee of Lake Charles and Mary Katherine of New Orleans, La.
Viola leaves to mourn, two devoted sisters, Orelia "Patsy" Jones and Lucille " Mommie " (Felton)Johnson; one brother Clifford Bennett, a host of nephews, nieces, cousins; two special friends, Paul and Julia Griffin, two God Daughters, Doris Collins and Rose London and Pastor Garner and the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church and many friends throughout Lake Charles and Newnan GA.
Her funeral will be at 12pm Saturday, December 8, in Mt Calvary Baptist Church. The Rev. Elmore Garner will officiate. Burial will be in Combre Memorial Park Cemetry under the direction of Combre Funeral Home. Visitation is from 10am Saturday in the churchat the distance of Newnan, Ga. and Lake Charles, La.
