Obituary

The Life Story of…

Wilbert J. Lewis, was born to William Jones and Mary Lewis on July 14, 1966, hailing from the Southwestern town of Lake Charles, Louisiana, has built a life of distinction and service in the arenas of Poetry, Civic Life, Civil Rights, Ministry and Public Speaking.  His name will be forever associated with the NAACP, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and The L.O.V.E. Foundation because of the remarkable legacy he created.  Wilbert was known to all as a very affable, endearing, humble and quiet man that was passionate about love, peace and respect.  He always challenged others to do and be their best.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Lake Charles who attended Jackson Street Elementary and Reynaud Middle School. While attending W. O. Boston the school merged with Lake Charles High School, becoming the first Graduating Class of LCB, Lake Charles Boston Class of 1984.  He excelled in basketball and football throughout his school years, earning a Football Scholarship to become a McNeese State University Cowboy.  While attending McNeese he became a member of Omega Phi Psi Fraternity, Inc., gaining the name "Unpredictable" in the Fall of '86.  After college, Wilbert became an employee of CITGO Refinery, where he was an Operator until his untimely demise.  A mentor, motivator, activist, author, poet and minister, Wilbert's impact on the communities, organizations and congregations he served and the young people he mentored leaves a legacy that will Bless generations to come.  He attended Christian Baptist Church and became an Associate Minister under the leadership of Pastor Edward Alexander.

"May the Works I've Done Speak for Me", are the words befitting to describe two books "Silent Child" and "Jewels of Wisdom" and The L.O.V.E Foundation (Life Opportunity Vision Enhancement) that were written and founded by Wilbert.  After many years of membership with the NAACP, Wilbert became President of the Lake Charles Chapter in 2004-2012.  He served on The Board with the Foreman Reynaud Community Center for many years and as President for years.  He assisted with obtaining the Charter for The 100 Black Men of Lake Charles Organization.  served with honor in every aspect of service to the community, being an advocate for youth and all he encountered.

He is preceded in death by his parents William Jones and Mary Lewis; first wife: Nechole B. Lewis; siblings: Gladys M. Simien, Sandra J. Gibbs, Dianna G. Lewis, Brenda Jones and Henry Jones.

Left to cherish the fond loving memories of Wilbert are his loving wife, Tessa Charles, Lewis; Three Sons he called his "Warriors": Christopher J. Lewis, Robert D. Lewis and Kingston N. Lewis all of Lake Charles, LA; Four Loving Bonus Children: Trevons (Vonranika) Charles of Rayne, LA, Ra'Chelene Charles of Rayne, LA, Robin Charles of Arnaudville, LA and Ranashia Charles of Church Point, LA; Five Loving and Adorable Grandchildren: Kai and Annalya Lewis, Lacey Gobert, Layla and Jonavon Charles; Two Sisters: Patricia Jones of Lake Charles, LA and Linda Ann Samuel of Atlanta, GA; Three Brothers: William (Carolyn) Jones, and Freddie Jones of Lake Charles, LA and Harold Lewis of Atlanta, GA; Godchildren: Ashley Jones Fuselier and Shawn Simien of Lake Charles, LA and Chase R. DeJean of LaPort, TX; Mother-in-law: Jacqueline Batiste of Rayne, LA;  Sisters-in-Law: Emily (Clifton) Granger of Crowley, LA and Annie Coleman of Rayne, LA; Brothers-in-law: Keenan and Don Charles of Rayne, LA; Best Friends like Brothers: Leonard Daniels and Roman Thompson; a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. "The Brotherhood" and The NAACP Members local and nationally.
